Welcome to Azur: People at the heart of science
At Azur Health Science, people are at the core of everything we do.
In this series, we introduce the team behind our scientific work, starting with our Medical Writing experts and our Full‑Stack Developers, who support our clinical activities and our digital scientific communication.
✨ Today, we’re happy to spotlight Thomas, who shares his journey, his passions, and his role at Azur Health Science.
Thomas, we’re so glad to have you with us in Welcome to Azur!
Let’s begin by getting to know your role and how you contribute to the team
I’m a full-stack web developer apprentice. My role is to develop new features for the application we’re building at Azur. A typical day: I check our ticketing tool, pick a bug or a feature to work on, analyze the requirements, then implement the solution. When I’m done, another developer reviews and tests my code. If changes are needed I fix them; otherwise the ticket is closed and I can pick another one to work on.
Before joining Azur, what academic, professional, or personal experiences led you toward software development?
I’ve been passionate about computers since I was 11–12 years old, I was already creating small games and software. At school, software development remained my main interest, so it felt natural to make it my career. I left a two-year technical degree in electronics to join a web developer training, then joined 42 Mulhouse school to pursue this profession.
What part of the development process do you find the most challenging, and how do you approach those moments?
What I find most challenging is having to implement a feature without knowing how to do it initially. To begin, I do research, prototype solutions, and then break the work down into several small steps. It’s an incredible feeling once the feature is finished.
What motivates you about working in a scientific and healthcare-focused environment as a developer?
What motivates me is the impact of developing tools for science and health. Speed up medical writing allows us to work more efficiently, which ultimately benefits patients indirectly and vulnerable groups like children.
Is there a type of project, feature, or technology stack you particulary enjoy working on?
When I learn something, I’m interested in everything, backend as well as frontend. What struck me most recently was the design of a text editor: simple in appearance, but complex to implement to meet our needs. Overall, I enjoy working on Azur Note, which is the application we are currently working on primarily. It’s a web application to simplify the workflow of medical writers. It offers features such as automatic style management, reference management and tools that facilitate reviews and quality control of documents. In addition, there are features specifically for project managers to manage the projects, clients and workload. It may seem simple at first, but its implementation can be technically complex to meet all our needs while keeping the user experience intuitive.
Outside of work, what activities or passions help you recharge or express yourself?
Outside of work, I enjoy watching movies and series, watching videos on YouTube, but what I prefer is learning new things or creating original things, like making my own cheese, composing music or, more recently, flying planes on a simulator.
Looking ahead, what are you excited to explore next in your journey as a Full Stack Developer?
I want to make it easier to maintain my applications by deepening my knowledge of software architecture, strengthening my knowledge of security, an essential element, but even more so in our sector, and exploring cloud architecture.
